Will Smith is officially back in the booth with Based on a True Story, his first album in two decades—and yeah, it kind of feels like we all just got invited to his group therapy session. The Oscars slap? It’s in there. Emotional baggage? Fully unpacked. Toss in some gospel flavor and a cameo from DJ Jazzy Jeff, and you’ve got yourself a very personal (and slightly unexpected) ride.
Some tracks hit hard—emotionally, not radio-hit hard—while others drift into “uncle at the cookout with something to prove” territory. It’s raw, honest, and occasionally a little too dramatic, but hey, it’s Will being Will.

Critics are mixed, the charts aren’t exactly lighting up—but honestly? That’s not the point. This album feels more like Will just needed to get stuff off his chest. And for anyone down to vibe with that kind of soul-searching energy, Based on a True Story is definitely worth a spin. Don’t forget to like, share and subscribe to keep up with the strides of the Hive!
